Where it is
Sachsen is Germany's smallest wine region after the Hessische Bergstraße and the easternmost. Vineyards run along the Elbe from Pillnitz near Dresden through Radebeul and Meissen.
Land and climate
The climate is cool and continental, with late spring frosts, so yields are low and vineyards are sited on warm, steep slopes. Granite, loess and clay soils dominate.
Grapes and wines
Müller-Thurgau, Weissburgunder, Riesling, Grauburgunder and Traminer are the main grapes, and the wines are mostly dry whites, usually sold locally.
