Where it is
The Mosel winds from the Luxembourg border past Trier and Bernkastel to Koblenz, where it joins the Rhine. The Saar and Ruwer are tributaries with their own vineyards. The region is called Mosel and covers a long stretch of the river.
Land and climate
Vines grow on blue and grey slate slopes, some of the steepest vineyards in the world, which face south, store heat and reflect light from the river. The cool climate gives light, high-acid Rieslings with low alcohol.
Grapes and wines
Riesling is the star, making wines from bone-dry to lusciously sweet. Wines are classified by the ripeness of the grapes at harvest: Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, then Beerenauslese, Eiswein and Trockenbeerenauslese. Elbling is an old white grape grown in the upper Mosel.
