Where it is

Saale-Unstrut lies along the Saale and Unstrut rivers in Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, around Naumburg and Freyburg. It is one of Germany's smallest and most northerly wine regions.

Land and climate

Vines are on terraces with dry-stone walls, on shell limestone and sandstone, and the cold continental climate means frost can reduce yields.

Grapes and wines

Müller-Thurgau, Weissburgunder and Silvaner are the main whites, with some Riesling. The wines are mostly dry, and are sold mainly in the region and nearby cities.
