Where it is

The Nahe flows into the Rhine at Bingen. The wine region follows the river and its side valleys, around Bad Kreuznach, Schlossböckelheim and Traisen, in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Land and climate

It is drier and warmer than the Mosel, protected by the Hunsrück hills. The region is known for its geological variety, which includes volcanic rock, slate, sandstone and loess.

Grapes and wines

Riesling is the leading grape, giving wines that can combine the fruit of the Rheingau with the minerality of the Mosel. Müller-Thurgau, Grauburgunder and Weissburgunder are also grown, and Spätburgunder is increasing.
