Where it is

Hessische Bergstraße is the smallest of Germany's 13 quality wine regions, with around 450 hectares between Darmstadt and Heppenheim in the state of Hesse, along the western edge of the Odenwald hills.

Land and climate

Sheltered by the Odenwald and open to the Rhine plain, the area is one of the warmest and earliest in Germany. Spring blossom comes early, and the region is known for its mild climate.

Grapes and wines

Riesling is the main grape and covers more than a third of the vineyard area, followed by Müller-Thurgau, Grauburgunder and Spätburgunder. Much of the wine is sold locally.
