Where it is

The Palatinate (Pfalz) lies in the south of Rhineland-Palatinate between the Haardt hills and the Rhine, next to Alsace. The Deutsche Weinstraße runs through it from Bockenheim to the French border.

Land and climate

One of the warmest and driest places in Germany, with almonds and figs growing in places. Sandstone, limestone, loess and clay soils give a range of wines.

Grapes and wines

Riesling is the leading grape, making dry whites in the middle of the region at Forst, Deidesheim and Ruppertsberg. Dornfelder is the most planted red, and Spätburgunder is increasingly highly rated. Grauburgunder, Weissburgunder and Müller-Thurgau are also common.
