Where it is

The Mittelrhein (Middle Rhine) runs along the river between Bingen and Bonn. Its best-known stretch lies in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with castles and small towns such as Bacharach and Boppard.

Land and climate

Vineyards are steep, terraced and mostly on slate, and the river reflects light and warms the slopes. Many plots are tiny and worked by hand, and many are now abandoned.

Grapes and wines

Riesling is by far the main grape, producing dry and off-dry wines with high acidity. Spätburgunder and Müller-Thurgau are also grown.
