Where it is

Baden stretches about 400 km from Lake Constance in the south along the Rhine and the Black Forest to the Tauber valley and Bergstraße in the north. It is the third largest German wine region and is divided into nine districts, including Kaiserstuhl, Markgräflerland and Ortenau.

Land and climate

It is the warmest German region, with a climate comparable to Alsace across the river. The Kaiserstuhl is an extinct volcano with loess and volcanic soils and some of the sunniest vineyards in the country.

Grapes and wines

Spätburgunder is the leading red. Whites include Grauburgunder and Weissburgunder (Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc), Müller-Thurgau and Gutedel (Chasselas) in the south. Baden wines are often fuller and drier than those from cooler regions.
