Where it is

The Ahr is a tributary of the Rhine in the northern part of Rhineland-Palatinate, among Germany's northernmost wine regions. Vineyards cover a short stretch of the valley around Ahrweiler, Dernau and Mayschoß. The 2021 floods badly damaged the valley and its wineries.

Land and climate

Steep slopes of slate and greywacke face south and hold heat, which allows red grapes to ripen despite the northern latitude.

Grapes and wines

Spätburgunder is by far the main grape, followed by Frühburgunder, Portugieser and Riesling. Most of the production is red, unusual for Germany, and ranges from light to rich and oak-aged.
