Where it is

Umbria is the only Italian region in the peninsula without a coast or a border. It lies between Tuscany and Lazio, with Perugia as its capital. Wine areas include Orvieto in the south-west, Montefalco, Torgiano and Lake Trasimeno.

Land and climate

Hilly, with warm summers and cool winters. The vineyards sit mostly on clay and limestone hills.

Grapes and wines

Sagrantino makes the dark, tannic red of Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG, sometimes dried as passito. Torgiano Rosso Riserva is based on Sangiovese. Orvieto is a pale, crisp white from Grechetto and Trebbiano.
