Where it is

Abruzzo lies on Italy's Adriatic side, east of Rome, with the Apennines (Gran Sasso and Maiella) behind a narrow coastal strip. Vineyards cover the hills between the mountains and the sea.

Land and climate

The hills get warm days from the Adriatic and cool air from the mountains, and vineyards run from the coast up to several hundred metres. Soils are mostly clay and limestone.

Grapes and wines

Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is the main red, a fruity, soft wine, and the grape is unrelated to the Tuscan town of Montepulciano. Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo is its rosé. Trebbiano d'Abruzzo is the white, and Pecorino and Passerina are increasingly popular local whites. Colline Teramane has its own DOCG for Montepulciano.
