Where it is

Sicily lies off the toe of Italy. Wine areas include Etna on the east coast, Marsala and the western plains, Vittoria in the south-east, and the island of Pantelleria.

Land and climate

A warm Mediterranean climate with sun and wind. Etna's vineyards go up to about 1,000 m on volcanic soils, so nights are cool, and the wines have elegance and acidity.

Grapes and wines

Nero d'Avola is the best-known red. On Etna, Nerello Mascalese makes light, fragrant reds and Carricante makes whites. Grillo is the base of Marsala, the fortified wine, and Catarratto is the most planted white. Zibibbo (Muscat of Alexandria) makes the sweet passito of Pantelleria. Cerasuolo di Vittoria is the island's only DOCG.
