Where it is

Tuscany lies in central Italy, between the Apennines and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Wine is made nearly everywhere, from Florence and Siena in the middle to the coastal Maremma.

Land and climate

Rolling hills with a warm summer, a cool, often wet winter and large day-night shifts at altitude. The soils include galestro (schist), alberese (limestone) and clay.

Grapes and wines

Sangiovese is the principal grape. Chianti and Chianti Classico are blends led by it; Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano are made from clones of Sangiovese. In the Maremma and on the coast at Bolgheri, so-called Super Tuscans blend Cabernet and Merlot with or without Sangiovese. Vernaccia di San Gimignano is the white DOCG.
