Where it is

Puglia runs along the Adriatic and Ionian coasts of south-east Italy, from the Gargano promontory down to Salento at the tip of the heel.

Land and climate

Hot, dry summers and mild winters, with sea breezes. The landscape is largely flat or gently rolling, with red limestone soils, and the vines are often old bush vines.

Grapes and wines

Primitivo, the same variety as California's Zinfandel, makes rich reds, notably in Manduria. Negroamaro is the dark red of Salento, found in Salice Salentino and as rosé. Nero di Troia makes reds in the north, around Castel del Monte. Much of Puglia's wine was once sent north for blending, but more is now bottled locally.
