Where it is

This northern region is made up of two autonomous provinces, Trentino in the south and South Tyrol (Alto Adige, or Südtirol) in the north, both in the Alps along the Adige valley. Vineyards climb to 1,000 m.

Land and climate

Cool nights, sunny days and steep slopes give wines with good acidity and aroma. The soils include dolomite, porphyry, limestone and glacial deposits.

Grapes and wines

Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco and Sauvignon are important whites; Gewürztraminer is thought to be named after the village of Tramin (Termeno). Reds include Lagrein, Schiava and Pinot Nero in Alto Adige and Teroldego Rotaliano in Trentino. Trento DOC is a sparkling wine made by the traditional method.
