Where it is
Campania covers the south-west coast of Italy around Naples, Pompeii and the Amalfi coast, with the Apennine hills of Irpinia and Sannio inland.
History
Vines were grown here in Roman times, when Falernian wine from the Campanian coast was famous. Pompeii, buried by Vesuvius in AD 79, had vineyards and wine shops.
Grapes and wines
Aglianico makes the long-lived reds of Taurasi DOCG, in Irpinia. Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo are the leading white DOCGs. Falanghina is a common white, and Piedirosso is a lighter local red, as is the Lacryma Christi red and white from Vesuvius's slopes.
