Where it is

Sardinia is Italy's second largest island, in the Mediterranean west of the mainland. The best-known wine areas are Gallura in the north-east for Vermentino, the Nuoro hills for Cannonau, and the south-west for Carignano del Sulcis.

Land and climate

Hot, dry and windy, with granite in the north and limestone and sand elsewhere. Many vines are old and bush-trained.

Grapes and wines

Cannonau is the Sardinian name of Grenache, and makes the red wines of the Nuoro hills. Vermentino di Gallura is the island's only DOCG. Carignano del Sulcis uses Carignan, and Vernaccia di Oristano is a dry, aged, sherry-like white.
