Where it is

Tejo (formerly Ribatejo) follows the Tagus river upstream from Lisbon, with the town of Santarém at the centre. The DOC Tejo has the subregions Almeirim, Cartaxo, Chamusca, Coruche, Santarém and Tomar.

Land and climate

Fertile alluvial plains by the river and sandy and clay soils away from it, with a climate between maritime and continental. The river floods in winter.

Grapes and wines

Fernão Pires is the main white and Castelão, Trincadeira, Aragonez and Touriga Nacional are the reds. Some of the wines are cheap and easy, and there are also estate wines with more concentration.
