Where it is

The Alentejo covers about a third of mainland Portugal, south-east of Lisbon. It is divided into eight subregions, among them Borba, Reguengos, Vidigueira and Portalegre.

Land and climate

Hot and dry, and many vineyards are irrigated. The landscape is gentle with cork oaks, olive trees and wheat. Soils include schist, granite and clay.

Grapes and wines

Reds from Aragonez (Tempranillo), Trincadeira, Alicante Bouschet and Touriga Nacional are the focus, and Antão Vaz and Arinto lead the whites. Some wine is still fermented in clay amphorae (talha) in the Roman tradition.
