Algarve

Portugal's southern coast, better known for beaches than wine but with a small wine scene of its own.

Where it is

The Algarve is the southernmost region of Portugal. There are four DOCs, Lagos, Portimão, Lagoa and Tavira, and the regional wine is labelled Algarve.

Land and climate

A warm Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot summers, with the Atlantic cooling the coast. Wine is not a large business here, and a substantial share of the vines are planted close to the sea.

Grapes and wines

Local grapes include Negra Mole and Castelão, with Touriga Nacional, Syrah and others in newer vineyards. Most wines are easy-drinking and drunk locally.
