Where it is

Beira Interior lies in the east of central Portugal, on the border with Spain, in a mountainous area that includes the Serra da Estrela. The DOC has three subregions, Castelo Rodrigo, Cova da Beira and Pinhel.

Land and climate

Continental, with cold winters, hot summers and altitude. The soils are mostly granite and schist.

Grapes and wines

Reds include Rufete, Touriga Nacional and Bastardo, and whites are Síria (Roupeiro), Fonte Cal and Malvasia Fina. Wines are fresher and lighter than those of the south.
