Where it is

Bairrada lies between Porto and Lisbon, close to the coast, near Coimbra and Aveiro. Beira Atlântico is the wider regional wine designation for the Atlantic coast of Beira.

Land and climate

Atlantic-influenced and wetter than the rest of the Beira, with clay-limestone soils. Rain at harvest is a risk.

Grapes and wines

Baga is the main red grape, firm and tannic when young and able to age for years. Maria Gomes (Fernão Pires) and Bical are the main whites. Espumante, a sparkling wine, is made by the traditional method, and the region is known for its roast suckling pig (leitão).
