Where it is

Lisboa is the wine region of the Atlantic coast north of the capital, stretching inland. Its DOCs include Alenquer, Arruda, Bucelas, Carcavelos, Colares, Encostas d'Aire, Lourinhã and Torres Vedras.

Land and climate

The Atlantic has a strong cooling influence on the western vineyards, with wind and mist. Bucelas makes crisp whites; Colares, on sand dunes, is famous for ungrafted vines.

Grapes and wines

Arinto is the white of Bucelas, and Fernão Pires is widely planted. Reds are Castelão, Aragonez and Touriga Nacional. Carcavelos is a rare fortified wine, and Lourinhã is known for aguardente.
