Where it is

Pennsylvania's main wine areas are the Lake Erie shore in the north-west, Lancaster Valley and Lehigh Valley in the south-east, and Cumberland Valley. William Penn is said to have tried to plant vines near Philadelphia in the 1680s.

Land and climate

Continental, with cold winters and humid summers. Disease pressure is high, so hybrid grapes are common.

Grapes and wines

Chambourcin and other French-American hybrids grow well, and growers also make Riesling, Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay. Lake Erie has been a centre for Concord grapes.
