Where it is

Main wine areas are the Finger Lakes in upstate New York, Long Island on the Atlantic coast, the Hudson River region and the Lake Erie shore.

Land and climate

In the Finger Lakes, deep lakes moderate the winter and keep frost off the slopes. Long Island has a maritime climate with a long growing season.

Grapes and wines

The Finger Lakes are famous for Riesling. Long Island makes Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay. Concord and other native American grapes are grown near Lake Erie.
