Where it is

Most of Ohio's vineyards lie along Lake Erie and on the islands, including Isle St. George and Kelleys Island. The state has the Lake Erie, Grand River Valley, Isle St. George and Ohio River Valley AVAs.

History

In the 1840s, Nicholas Longworth of Cincinnati made sparkling Catawba, and Ohio was for a time the largest wine-producing state.

Grapes and wines

Catawba and Concord are native grapes. Vinifera varieties, such as Chardonnay, Riesling and Cabernet Franc, are increasingly grown along the Lake Erie shore.
