Where it is

Michigan's wine areas are on the Leelanau and Old Mission peninsulas near Traverse City, in the Lake Michigan Shore AVA in the south-west, and the Fennville AVA.

Land and climate

The Great Lakes moderate the climate, but winters can be hard. Lake-effect snow insulates the vines.

Grapes and wines

Riesling is the leading white, and Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are also grown. The state also makes sparkling and ice wines.
