Where it is

Wairarapa is the south-east of the North Island, over the Rimutaka range from Wellington. Its areas are Martinborough, Gladstone and Masterton.

Land and climate

Cool and dry, with strong wind. Pinot Noir ripens slowly on the free-draining gravel at Martinborough.

Grapes and wines

Pinot Noir has made Martinborough famous, and Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay are also made. Yields are low.
