Where it is

Hawke's Bay is on the east coast of the North Island, around Napier and Hastings. Missionaries planted vines here in 1851, and Mission Estate is New Zealand's oldest winery.

Land and climate

Among the sunniest and driest regions of New Zealand, with a long growing season. Gimblett Gravels is a defined area of free-draining gravel soils.

Grapes and wines

Red grapes Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah do well, and Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are the main whites.
