Where it is

North Canterbury is on the east coast of the South Island, centred on the Waipara Valley about an hour north of Christchurch.

Land and climate

Dry, with sheltered sites and limestone and clay soils. The hills protect it from the sea wind.

Grapes and wines

Pinot Noir, Riesling and Chardonnay are the leading grapes. Also grown are Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris.
