Where it is

Auckland's wine areas are on Waiheke Island in the Hauraki Gulf, Kumeu and Huapai north-west of the city, and Matakana to the north.

Land and climate

Warm and humid, with a maritime climate and rain at harvest. Waiheke is drier and sunnier than the mainland.

Grapes and wines

Chardonnay, Syrah and Bordeaux-style red blends. Many are small, boutique producers, and Waiheke is known for expensive reds.
