Where it is

The Ribera del Duero lies in the provinces of Burgos, Segovia, Soria and Valladolid in Castilla y León, along 115 km of the Duero river, with Peñafiel and Aranda de Duero as main towns.

Land and climate

The vineyards are at 700 to 1,000 m. Summers are hot, but nights are cool and winters are cold, with spring frosts a risk. The soils are chalky, clay and sand.

Grapes and wines

Tempranillo, known locally as Tinto Fino or Tinta del País, is the dominant grape. Aged wines are labelled Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva according to time in oak and bottle. Vega Sicilia, near Valbuena de Duero, is the area's oldest and best-known estate, founded in the 1860s.
