Where it is

Rías Baixas lies in the far north-west of Spain, in Galicia, around the estuaries (rías) south of Cape Finisterre. Its five subzones are Val do Salnés, Condado do Tea, O Rosal, Soutomaior and Ribeira do Ulla.

Land and climate

Atlantic, cool and wet, with fog and rainfall above 1,500 mm a year in places. Vines are trained high on pergolas (parras) to keep the grapes dry and away from damp soil. The soils are granitic.

Grapes and wines

Albariño makes up most of the production, a dry, citrus and stone-fruit white with good acidity. Wines labelled by subzone can blend with other local grapes, such as Loureiro and Treixadura.
