Where it is

Hebei surrounds Beijing and Tianjin. The main wine areas are Huailai, in the Guanting basin north-west of Beijing, and Changli on the Bohai coast, about 300 km east.

Land and climate

Continental, with cold winters and warm summers. In Huailai, the Guanting Reservoir moderates the climate; in Changli, sandy soils and the sea breeze are the main influences.

Grapes and wines

Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay dominate, together with Merlot, Marselan and Cabernet Gernischt. Several large producers are based here.
