Where it is

The Maipo Valley runs south and west of Santiago, from the Andes foothills to the coast. It is divided into Alto Maipo (the upper valley), Central Maipo and Pacific Maipo.

Land and climate

Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers. Alto Maipo, at the foot of the Andes, has cooler nights and is known for Cabernet Sauvignon.

Grapes and wines

Cabernet Sauvignon is the classic grape, often blended with Merlot and Carmenère. Several of Chile's oldest wineries are in the valley, with bush-trained old vines, some of which were planted before phylloxera.
