Where it is

Upper Hungary (Felső-Magyarország) includes the wine districts of Eger, Mátra and Bükk, in the hills of the north-east, east of Budapest.

Land and climate

Volcanic and loess soils on the southern slopes of the Mátra and Bükk mountains. The Eger cellars were cut into volcanic tuff.

Grapes and wines

Eger is known for Egri Bikavér, a red blend with Kékfrankos, Kadarka and other grapes, and for Egri Csillag, a white blend. Mátra produces fresh, light whites such as Olaszrizling and Hárslevelű.
