Where it is

Balaton is a wine region in western Hungary around Lake Balaton, about 100 km south-west of Budapest. It has several districts including Badacsony, Balatonfüred-Csopak, Balatonboglár and Nagy-Somló.

Land and climate

The lake stores heat and softens the climate. The Badacsony hills are basalt remnants of volcanoes, and Somló, a little north, is a small volcanic butte famous for its minerally whites.

Grapes and wines

Olaszrizling (Welschriesling) is the most planted grape. Kéknyelű, a rare local grape, grows almost only at Badacsony. Szürkebarát is Pinot Gris, and Juhfark and Furmint are grown at Somló. Reds include Kékfrankos.
