Where it is

South Australia has Adelaide as its capital, with wine areas including the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley, Clare Valley, McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills, Coonawarra and Riverland.

Land and climate

Mostly warm and dry. Coonawarra's terra rossa soil over limestone suits Cabernet Sauvignon, and cool Eden Valley and Clare Valley sites suit Riesling. The Adelaide Hills are cooler still.

Grapes and wines

Barossa is known for rich Shiraz and old-vine Grenache, many from vines planted in the 1800s that survive because Australia never had phylloxera in the region. McLaren Vale makes Shiraz and Grenache, and Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. Riverland is a large irrigated area for volume wines.
