Where it is

Rostov oblast is in southern Russia where the Don river flows to the Sea of Azov. Wine is made in the Tsimlyansk and Rostov districts and along the lower Don.

History

Don Cossacks grew grapes along the river for centuries. Tsimlyanskoye Sparkling, made in the Soviet era from local varieties, is a regional specialty.

Grapes and wines

Tsimlyansky Cherny and Krasnostop Zolotovsky are local red grapes, and many vines are buried in winter against frost. The wines include reds, sparkling and some sweet styles.
