Where it is

Dagestan lies in the North Caucasus on the Caspian Sea, between Chechnya and Azerbaijan. The vineyards are mainly in the lowlands near Derbent, Kizlyar and Makhachkala.

History

Vines have been grown in Dagestan for centuries, and Derbent was a trading town on the Silk Road. Wine and brandy production expanded in the Soviet era, and Kizlyar became known for brandy.

Grapes and wines

Rkatsiteli and Aligoté are common white grapes, and Cabernet Sauvignon and Saperavi are used for reds. A local variety, Bayanshira, is used for white wine and brandy. Dagestan is a large producer of wine grapes for Russia.
