Where it is
The region covers France's Mediterranean coast from the Rhône delta to the Pyrenees, taking in the departments of Gard, Hérault, Aude and Pyrénées-Orientales. It is administratively part of Occitanie.
Land and climate
Hot, dry summers and mild winters, with mistral and tramontane winds that keep the vines healthy. Vineyards go from coastal plains to hills such as the Corbières, Minervois and Pic Saint-Loup.
Grapes and wines
Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan and Cinsault are the red grapes. Quality varies from simple Vin de Pays d'Oc to appellations such as Saint-Chinian, Faugères, Corbières, Minervois and Pic Saint-Loup. Limoux makes sparkling Blanquette and Crémant, and Roussillon makes sweet fortified wines such as Banyuls and Maury.
