Where it is
Corsica lies in the Mediterranean, about 170 km off the French coast and north of Sardinia. Vineyards line the coast and lower valleys, with the main areas around Patrimonio in the north, Ajaccio in the west and Sartène in the south.
Land and climate
A warm Mediterranean climate, cooled by sea breezes and altitude. Soils vary from granite to schist and limestone, and the maquis scrub gives its scent to many wines.
Grapes and wines
Nielluccio is the same grape as Tuscany's Sangiovese, and gives the reds of Patrimonio. Sciaccarello is a local red used for fruity reds and rosés around Ajaccio. Vermentino makes most of the whites. Muscat du Cap Corse is a sweet white. Corsican rosé is popular.
