Where it is

Mendoza is in west-central Argentina, against the Andes, and produces most of Argentina's wine. Notable areas are Luján de Cuyo and Maipú, the Uco Valley, and San Rafael to the south.

Land and climate

A high desert, with vineyards at roughly 700 to 1,500 m. Rain is scarce, and snowmelt from the Andes irrigates the vines through old channels. Days are sunny and nights cold.

Grapes and wines

Malbec is the signature grape, ripe and plummy, from French vine stock. Cabernet Sauvignon, Bonarda, Syrah and Torrontés are also grown. High altitude helps the wines keep their acidity.
